About us
Our artisan craft workshop is based in a small village near South Brent near the foot hills of beautiful South Dartmoor in Devon. Inspired by public support to reduce household plastic use and to find realistic and re-usable alternatives; Devon Beeswax Wrap Co was formed. After a significant delay due to the global pandemic, and after supplying a local Eco Business, we are now delighted to be able to offer our range to you.
We believe that every household can make a difference with small changes and lifestyle choices and together that can make a significant impact to reverse the contamination of plastics in our environment and ecosystems. At the same time, Beeswax Food Wraps, are so versitile and a delight to use, with other added benefits and they are available in some amazing beautiful cotton fabrics too. We are continuously seeking new and exciting fabric designs and will be expanding our range to also include a vegan alternative in due course.
Our Working Policies
At Devon Beeswax Wrap Co we follow sound ethical business practices in all aspects of our working environment.
Materials - All our materials are natural and sourced from UK suppliers. The fabric is 100% cotton with a quality strong weave weight in order to provide a canvas for the beeswax recipe and create a durable and long lasting product. The fabrics chosen are OEKO-TEX certified. The beeswax has been naturally filtered three times to remove impurities and therefore has a light colour; white beeswax has been filtered five times removing most, if not all, the pollen. Most of our customers prefer the less filtered beeswax that has had less processing. The beeswax is a food grade quality and can used next to food products. The tree resin is from pine and suitable for food use. In the near future we will be swapping to Damar Resin which is also a tree resin and more hypoallergenic. We use organically certified Jojoba Oil that allows the finished wrap to be malleable.
Packaging - All our products use biodegradable packaging inclkuding packaging for mailing to our customers.
Delivery - We use Royal Mail collection service because the postperson visits our village daily to deliver normal residential post; so there are no extra vehical journeys in order to send our products to you.
Website - Our Provider Create.net. They are committed to getting as close to a zero carbon business as they can and have signed the UK's SME Climate Commitment. This commitment is recognised by the United Nation's Race to Zero campaign. Our website host plants 2 trees per month as part of our package whilst have signed up to zero carbon hosting. More details can be found here. https://www.create.net/about/sustainability
Waste - We are a zero waste company. From production to shipping our company does not generate any waste products.
Production: Our quality control is such that any fabric or wrap that doesn't meet our quality standards is either re-sized (if due to a cutting error or manufacturing flaw) and small offcuts or enrobed fabric is re-used for other purposes. Very small fabric offcuts are composted.
Our Products
Our Range
We looked very closely at the range and sizes provided by other companies and decided to include in our first product range of 3 beeswax wraps a large wrap that would be big enough to wrap a small loaf of bought bread or 1KG sourdough cob or can cover a small mixing bowl. So our large size wrap is a generous 40cm x 40cm. Based on what customers had said during our product trial this worked for their use without being too large.
Over the course of 2024 we will be adding more ranges, sizes and associated products. Do please sign up to our newsletter so you can find out when new products and fabric designs are added.
Our Quality Standards
During processing, and after a pre-wash, pressing and cutting out, each individual piece of cotton is hand crafted using a high quality enrobing process. Our special beeswax and resin recipe mixture is worked into the fibres of the fabric by hand until it is fully enrobed at capacity. This creates a wrap that once set and cured is semi-rigid yet malleable until it meets the magic warmth or your hands when you mould it to containers or to itself. We ensure that the wraps have a good stickiness without the ability of the recipe leaving the wrap and jumping onto your fingers or other surfaces!
Made with care
Each wrap is made with care knowing that expectations will be high from our customers. We value every customer who takes this journey in making their household one step closer to being plastic free, replacing either cling film, plastic food bags or alluminium foil, and therefore every wrap is made with our customers expectations embedded in the ethos of processing for every Beeswax wrap made.
Small, Local and Ethical
We supply traders, small businesses and independant shops. Small, Local and ethical; a business ethos we love at Devon Beeswax Wrap Co. These businesses are part of our communities all over the country and they know their customers often by name. And likewise with their suppliers and there is nothing quite like that relationship formed that just doesn't happen with the giants and chains in business. We aim to visit all our local trade customers and build a warm relationship with them. We select our trade customers that sell direct to customers within their communities (they may also have an online shop) and that have strong and robust enviromental and sustainable trading policies.
